Origami Roses
by John Flynn

Destiny Jane sees Free Will Tommy

Sitting in a bar making origami roses
Out of cocktail napkins
Ever so sincere
Tommy hands are rose to Jane
She just turns up her nose saying
That's not something I can use
To buy myself a beer
Freewill says it wasn't meant to be
As he shakes his head at Destiny
He says
Maybe in the scheme of things
What God said to Van Gogh is
Try to turn these white squares
Into origami roses
Destiny Jane and Free Will Tommy
Eat the beer nuts and salami sandwiches they ordered
Destiny just grins
She says Tommy you're disgraceful
What a slob you've got a face full
Of that yellow mustard
Grab a rose and wipe your chin
Tommy rolls his eyes in mock dismay
As destiny hands him a bouquet
She says
Maybe in the scheme of things
What tormented Van Gogh is
Trying to cut the mustard
With his origami roses
Free Will Tommy and Destiny Jane
Pay the check and let the rainy night come in the Tavern
As they vanish through the door
As a waitress clears a tray full
She takes one rose from the table
Tucks it in the pocket of the apron that she's worn
Her smile disappearing instantly
When she looks for a gratuity
Maybe in the scheme of things
What God said to Van Gogh is
Never tip the server with your origami roses
