Hi, John,

Diane Sawyer on ABC World News just said that she would be spending next week in the Gulf. She asked viewers to submit any questions or comments we wanted to share with the people affected by this tragedy. I have just read the words to your new song, Paint the Money Black (I'm dying to hear it). Wow! What a powerful statement! You really ought to submit is to ABC. (ABC World News with Diane Sawyer has a place to add comments, etc. on lne.)

I enjoyed you so much at Chaplain's.

Thank you. Judy Gallagher

John,
We met at Goshen Friends last month.  I was so impressed with your music, and I bought two CD's.  I now have all of the songs memorized and have introduced you to my parents who also love you.

If you are ever in the West Chester, PA area again and need an opening act, I would be honored to open for you.  I opened up for EmmyLou Harris sometime ago, and have played many clubs in NYC and many festivals in this area.  If you'd like to hear a sample of my work, you can visit www.cdbaby.com/stephaniephillips or watch my YouTube video called "Yes We Can".

We had a great time at the home concert in Houston last night!  I had no idea it would be so much fun - especially the "singing along" part.  You did make me cry a little - with the elephant song!  I was afraid he'd drown!

You are a good Catholic boy (I can tell) and a good son.  Keep up the faith and the
music!

Just spent a great evening listening to John at the Rouse House concert.  John is a truely magnificent performer and songwriter and poet who matures  with more and more depth each day.  Like a parent who regrets the loss of a child who has blossomed into a wonderful adult,  I too miss the rather stupid, funny songs of John's past.
I miss 'If it walks like a Duck"   and "Road Kill"   etc.    This is not John's
problem, it is mine.  He is great.  I am just a sentimental old fool .
I wish you all could have been there tonight to enjoy with us.

Dear John,

I'm enjoying your new CD.  I have questions about the meaning of lyrics in the song The Cure.  I tend to read lyrics rather literally instead of metaphorically.  What does the chorus mean--"sometimes the cure for the pain is in the pain...sometimes it (truth) drips from your fingertips"?
Peace,
Jim

John--

I saw you earlier tonight at the Phil Ochs song night at the Ark in Ann Arbor.  (I shook your hand on the way out of the venue.)  I was really moved by your interpretations of Phil's songs and by your own song as well.  I look forward to purchasing your CDs in the near future.  Come back to the Detroit area soon!

All best wishes,

I heard you today on Creativity Radio out here in gold Country-Radio Bird Street in Oroville, CA.  Great show and great insights.  I just finished a small book of poetry called "Ink Melodies".  Yesterday, I was nodding off in front of my computer and composed an entire 3-verse poem in my mind!  I usually need the interaction of a writing instrument---wow! Who knew the 3pm slump could be inspirational! I really had to get writing so it wouldn't pour out of my head!

By the way, you look exactly the way you sound---that's a good thing!!

Hi John,

I really enjoyed your show at the Minstrel Coffeehouse this past Friday, and I am thrilled with my autographed copy of your new CD.  I think my favorite is "The Darker the Night, the Brighter the Stars".  Some of the songs you performed made me laugh, some made me cry, so I guess that means you did a good job.

Hope to see you when you are back in the area again.

Best wishes,

I wish to thank you for writing the song "Dover".  I work for the Veterans Hospital and that song really hits home for me.  I see day in and day out what the men and women of our military has survived serving our country.  I must admit that it is heartbreaking to see all who have served our country in such physical and mental pain.  I am extremely proud to serve those who have served us.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this beautiful song.

John,

Thanks so much for a wonderful coffeehouse at Greenwood here in Ann Arbor. Being Franciscan-less out here in Michigan, it was great to connect with a friend of friends.

As I drove away, I remembered the end of the story about my son that I had started to tell you. So here's a recap, but with the ending:

When Alex was little and would get the hiccups, I would make a big play out of trying to "scare the hiccups away" by whispering to him, "George Bush is president!" He'd giggle, and hiccup again. So I'd try, "Dick Cheney is still in office!" or sometimes just a plain old, "Donald Rumsfeld!" Typically, no luck.

But it got to where Alex was trying to equate George Bush with his 3 or 4 year old version of evil -- like Zurg in Toy Story. Well, that wouldn't do. So we started to talk about respecting the office of the President, but that we thought Bush made "bad decisions." Right. 4 year olds know all about bad decisions. So we'd be in the minivan with NPR on, and Alex would hear Bush's name, and would pipe up with, "Yeah, he makes bad decisions!"

Then one day I got an email from my husband, with a link to a YouTube video. I watched it and burst out laughing. Alex zeroed in on me from across the room: "Whatcha laughin' at, Mommy?" He came over and I showed him the video of the Iraqi reporter throwing shoes at then-President Bush during a press conference. Alex nodded sagely, and said, "He makes bad decisions, but he's a really good ducker!"

Peace, salaam, shalom (and shared bowls of cereal),
sue

Your words of kindness in November '08 came back to me as I said goodbye to my dear friend John, who lost his battle with cancer.  When one leaves the heart open, one risks pain.  Then again, to avoid the risk one never knows the joy of true friendship. I have been to many of your concerts...almost everyone that was at Philly Folk festival and some others. Last night I was sitting in my dorm room in Newark Delaware looking around at area concerts when I was trying to see when you were playing in town I found that literally at the moment I was looking at the schedule you were on XPN! It made my night. The new album sounds great I can't wait to buy it.

Hi, John.  I wanted to thank you, albeit belatedly, for taking a few minutes out of your time to speak with me after your recent performance at Steel City Coffee House.  I had a rather strong reaction to a few of your songs, especially those that dealt with losing loved ones. Your kind words that spoke of allowing my heart to be open, even when those around me are struggling with life-threatening illnesses, were most appreciated. I believe when one needs to hear a message, someone or something appears that will provide this message. Perhaps this is what was to happen that evening.  In any case, I thank you for your generosity of spirit.
(my belated thanks are due to my own surgery and recovery, again my apologies for being so late in my thanks)

My friends, Sherri-Lee and Duncan, who came with me, are now John Flynn fans!  Your songs touched their hearts too.....

Thank you for being able to put into words and music those very personal and passionate feelings that we share.  Thank you for having the courage to open hearts!  Thank you for being you!

Looking forward to that new CD....and seeing you again soon...

If anyone has the opportunity to go to one of John's house concerts...don't miss it!!  And John, keep on fighting the good fight, your words inspire us and help carry us through difficult times.  Thank you for that!  During Thomas' deployment I've truly learned to "trust the rope."  God Bless!

I sure hope we can get to a concert where you both are....

I was reading your January note, and your reference to the hope that an Obama presidency would bring to every parent and child in America. While it is true an Obama presidency would inspire every child in America to believe in the possibilities of their lives, particularly all of America's sons.  Let's not forget the hope that a Hillary Clinton presidency would bring to Americas daughters.

It was truly a pleasure seeing you in Granville, Ohio the weekend before last.  I have been playing your music on the Online Folk Festival for quite some time, and put Two Wolves on my Top Ten list for 2007, and I was even more impressed after seeing you perform live.  I can't wait for the new album - the new songs you performed were most impressive.

Hi John,
My name is Julia Randolph and I live in Dover. My son called to tell us about your song "Dover", since my husband, Pete, was at Dover for 29 years, except for a year at Danang, Viet Nam in 1971. My husband found your song on the internet and listened to it twice. While it was playing the first time he got teary eyed and after listening for the second time, he cried for over 30 minutes. While in Nam, he saw our "Heroes" being loaded on C141's regularly. He also saw them arriving at  Dover before going to Nam. After returning from Nam, he saw our "heroes" returning here. He also saw many "Heroes" coming home from Granada, Panama, Somalia, and Desert Storm. I really believe that hearing your song brought him a little closer to "final closure" of some terrible things he was a part of for all those years. I hope all stations everywhere play your song. We need to bring our "Boys" home. Vote for a candidate that will take care of the "Homeland" and the U.S. citizens.  Maybe one day soon, the only thing the C5's and C17's bring into Dover will be regular cargo.

Thanks for the song.

Hello John,

As a retired member of the USAF I'm glad to hear that someone has written a very pionette song about those who have given all for their country.  It makes me proud to say I served.  I was in the desert during the original Desert Shield, Storm and Calm back in 1991.  Your words are a tribute to those men and women who have sacrificed their lives.  Please continue the good work and may your career continue.

Hi John,

We saw you in Cleveland this evening and thought you were great.  Julia lives in Ohio and said the spirit of activism we heard was so far from the usual apathy that she felt like she must be somewhere else.  Bice lives in New York and felt right at home.  We enjoyed your set so much that we looked up your website right away.  Two things:
1) Tell your audience your last name during the set!  (we were late and had to ask the guy with the beard in the corner).
2) "If we were to elect Obama, every human being on the planet could literally share the dream that his or her [son or grandson] could one day grow up to be president of the United States!"  It would be great.  But, in the spirit of putting your freedom where your mouth is, please remember that as long as women cannot be elected to highest office in this country every human being here is not yet free.
Thanks for your music,
Bice & Julia

I'm glad more people are learning about you and your wonderful music.

Well, Mr. Flynn, I've gotta be honest.  I finally heard your song 'Dover' shortly after sending one of my platoon's M240 gunners that way and it was heartrending.  I hope that big airplane brought my friend down easy.

But I also agree with your message to a point.  I would've liked to know that my friend was honored when he returned to Dover before he was shipped to the Islands where he was born, but with groups like Westboro Baptist Church that protest at Soldier's funerals with signs like, "God loves dead Soldiers!", I don't want my friend subjected to that kind of crap.  Which brings us to your song, "Not with my Jesus".  Man, Mr. Flynn, if only the people over here would listen that one old man on the mat, and the people at Westboro would listen to the little girl...

Anyway, I enjoy your music a lot, Mr. Flynn.  Say hi to Sean and Sarah and Cole and Ethan (man, I still remember that little bugger from Prospect) for me.

I Will Not Fear,
Thomas Morris

Dear Mr. John Flynn;
A few years ago I traveled with your mother in Amtrak, I was her train attendant. Sadly when I moved out from the states, I lost her name and address it is a shame I don’t recall her name. But clearly I remember her as such a warm, sweet, real, happy and honest persona. Please send my love to her and tell her that I still keep the CD she send me to California, of her dear son John, the tape I did send it to my nephews as I told her.
Now I’m in Chile, far away from my lovely second home for 23 years, the USA.  Currently I’m teaching English in a very nice High School near Santiago and this coming week we are preparing the final tests for the students and for the listening part of the English test, I will proudly use one of your songs Mr. Flynn and my favorite one “ When the Angels aren’t there”.
Thank you for all what you do for our Planet and specially the kids that live in it.
Merry Christmas for your mother, for you and your family and friends too.Peace, Love and God be with you and your family,

I have to tell you that it was a conversation with you many years ago that made me revisit my pro-death penalty stance and change my way of thinking.  Of course, John Grisham's book, "An Innocent Man" has something to do with it or at least made me reaffirm that I am now anti-death penalty.  Keep up your good work and your passion.

Hi John,
It was almost 15 years ago that we heard you play at the Spotted Hog.  Since then my father-in-law has passed and we have added to our family.  We now have a 15 year daughter, 8year old and 3 year old boys.  Tonight my Nathan(3 yrs.) heard the Manatee song and Crayon song. (Crayon for short) He couldn't get enough.  It brought back very fond memories from the "Spotted Pig" (what Stan would call the Spotted Hog).  Thank you for the great memories.  I have to admitt there were alot of tears shed tonight

Do you ever play near Atlantic City?  If not, may I suggest the Historic Towne of Smithville?  They are always doing craft fairs, children festivals, etc.  Also, how can I get info on School assemblies?  My son attend the Assumption Regional Catholic School and I thing they would love to!!

Thanks for the memories,

So I put Dragon in last night on my way home from Rick's and we listened to it on the way into work this morning...the whole thing, traffic was bad! I hope this note finds you and all of yours well.

John Flynn is my best favorite discovery in 2007.  I am grateful for his album Two Wolves.  His writing style represents a passion that has been lost in most music of today.  I have listened to Blink dozens of time and cry each time.  The poignancy of his message crawls into my heart and soul and rests.  It reminds us to be grateful everyday, for what we have.  Thank you, John.

I think my favorite song is,"My Father's Chapel".
I spend two days at The Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival and Sunday at Spring Gulch, and that's the song stuck in my head.

Hi John,
A funny story about one of your songs....
After my daughter and I saw you at the little Christ Unity Coffee house in Chattanooga, TN earlier this year, your Two Wolves CD never comes out of the car.  As a result my fiancé’s children have learned all the songs as well.  Paul, my fiancé, is a school teacher living near Atlanta and his 7 year old son attends this same school.  One day his son's teacher came to pull Paul out of his class room, once in the hall they could clearly hear Paul Jr's voice loudly singing "There's a big boat coming over the water....".  Paul Jr was 'sitting' alone in the boy’s rest room at the time.....

Thank you for such beautiful and meaningful music that can give our overworked and underpaid school teachers such a good laugh and most importantly be enjoyed by 41 to 7 year olds equally!!!

Comments/Questions: Hi Mr. Flynn;

My name is Jennifer Franklin and I know you here it alot but I am one of you biggest fans I remember listen to you when I was about 15 or so. My DAD Dennis Franklin had gotten me to listen to you and I fell in love with your music some was funny and had alot of meaning. Some most was touching and still had alot of meaning. Although I never make it to one of you shows my dad always keeps me up to date on you music. John,
How good is your memory....how about all the way back to grade school.  I had heard that you were doing well.  Great music.  The last time I heard you play was at the Gas Light in Ridley Park.  I'm in Oxford now and I'm going to try and catch your concert at Assumption.  Take care.

I find myself going back to the video about once a week now. The whole world needs to hear your songs of courage and hope.

Hello John!  We very much enjoyed your show back in August.  Forgive me for not writing sooner to tell you.  I also wanted to tell you that it has been your music which has distracted me, cheered me, motivated me, and inspired me in getting through a tough time.  In particular, "Trust the Rope" held special meaning for me.  Thank you for your music.

I love the new album!! It touched my heart and soul as so many of your songs / albums have over the past 18 years! It also made me miss those days many years ago when I could go to hear you sing multiple times a week... I use to refer to a evening of your music as my therapy....but, I wanted to tell you that I went directly to Tower Records in Stamford, CT yesterday and bought the only copy they had in the store!!! It was a thrill to hear the large record chain say, yes..we have the album!! Congratulations! and Thank you.

Hey, John....thanks for the many gifts you gave us at Kerrville.  As we left the Sunday after your performances, my niece and nephew and I (10, 7, & 48) sang "A Manatee Sneezed on Me"  all the way to the car.  Manatees are my nephew's favorite animals, and he talked all week about "John Flynn."  He had stayed for the kids' harmonica workshop and gave us harmonica concerts with songs called, for example,  "Why Do Girls Kiss?" (that one had no story line, just wistful notes) and "Why Did It Have to Happen?" (story of a boy killed by a bolt of lightning, played with eyes stretched wide open in alarm).
I'm sure your encouragement about harmonicas and how no song he writes can be "wrong" was partly behind our wonderful daily concerts last week of songs "more and more glorious, and the others will be very very sad."
I learned something about humility, listening to you sing, which is my current spiritual quest--trying to understand how humility is not about humiliation, and where the strength in it is.
Thank you for all of that.

John- It's been over 20 yrs since Dawson Farley asked if I'd mind a quick stop at Legends Lounge in the Trevose Holiday Inn. He said someone owed him "a few bucks", (or maybe the other way 'round), but we stopped in, took a table & a plate full of free finger food. Some "long-hair" was in the corner re-stringin' his guitar, but I was paying closer attention to the waitress named Jackie. Then the "long-hair" came over & sat down with us. It was then that I first shook hands with John Flynn. Before a blink of an eye, weeks had passed, I was now a Legend's regular. Ox the bartender knew my favorite drink, Jackie; my favorite snack, & John would just auotmatically sing "Amarillo By Morning" when he saw me come in.(Unless I asked for "Long, Long, Time")
Seems my eyes must of blinked again, for it's over 10 yrs now since Dawson has passed away, or Ox moved back to Hawaii, & I suspect Jackie's kid's are in college. Me, I'm anoying my 4th wife, & I doubt if you ever watch "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" or sing George Straight anymore. Even the "Spotted Hog" memories are somewhat faded too. Our paths have crossed far too few times, our hands grasped in greetings not nearly enough. although I still have every cassette tape, or CD you ever scribbled your name across, from before "Phila Cowboy" (Live at the Valley Forge Music Fair" - Yep, it's been torn down too) to a recent gift of "Dragon", given to me from a co-worker named Becky,(a Group-W Bench member) I gotta tell ya that when Becky said she she spoke with you at Longwood Garden's & asked you if you knew me, (as you signed her soon-to-be-mine copy of Dragon,) the last thing I would have expected was to hear you'de said "yes". She went on to say that with a smile you briefly mentioned we'd been friends .

John,

It was great meeting you and hearing your performance at the Phil Ochs Song Night last night in Appleton, WI. Your song "Two Wolves" blew me away. I actually had heard the story before from a Native American friend of mine, but you did a great job crafting it into a folk song. I am a newbie folksinger and I would like to learn that song and play it for people in this area (unfortunately not many came to the show to hear it firsthand). If you get a chance please send me the chords. I was so taken in by the story I forgot to look at what chords your fingers were playing.

I am now listening to the new CD. It's great. Larry Campbell! Very cool. I am a big Bob Dylan fan and know him from that band.

Thanks,

YEARS ago, as single bar hoppers, we used to go see you at the Four Dogs Tavern in WC.  Now, we have a 3 1/2 year old son who didn't want to go to last year's Philly Folk Fest if John Flynn wasn't going to be there ("I don't wanna see new people!  I want John Flynn!") and will not go to sleep at night without having Box of Crayons playing on his CD player.
I guess, simply put, we love you.

John, just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the new lyrics of Minnie Lou, posted in your Notes from JF on 1/31/06!  They were great additions to an already great song.  You're obviously never at a loss for inspiration.  (But our favorite song is, and always will be, A Manatee Sneezed on Me!)  We had hoped to be at your Longwood Gardens show in late Jan, but were unable to make it up there.  Still hoping you'll make it back down to the D.C. area again this year.  We've been checking your schedule, waiting for a date close enough for us to see you.  We'll keep looking. Will you be updating this year's schedule soon?  In the meantime, keep doing what you're doing, and we'll see you soon enough!

I had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing you at Tipitina's in New Orleans on 12/17.  I was in the front row and when I looked into your eyes your music and lyrics touched my soul.  To say I was mesmerized would be an understatement!  I am a "Katrina Victim" and the thing I miss most of all about "my" New Orleans is the music....the heartbeat and the soul of this city.  Katrina took a lot from us, but our hope remains.  Your song about what friends do brought tears to my eyes.  My soul aches for the sort of music you write....I bought "Dragon" and have listened to it over and over again.  God bless Arlo and the whole entourage for the gifts you gave us all.  Please come again to the banks of the Big Easy.  Troubadours like you make the world a magic place!!!  Katrina took my best buddy back to Alabama.  You remind me of him in a way...check it out:  graysoncapps.com

I had first herd Dragon on a Boston Folk radio station WUMB, that song rang true, as well as Only one, Full Circle, Benediction, and of the 35 year old Kadir at the Prague Zoo (Aug 13, 2002)- Big Boat Comin. I had done a search and have since purchased the albums Dragon, John Flynn, and looking for others. All the songs I have herd have good words, meanings. I will continue to look for John's work, and pass it along to my friends. If I am lucky I may be able to see John preform in person. Keep doing what you're doing! It's great music. John, In your recent note concerning the successful landing of the Airbus with malfunctioning landing gear you wrote "...we have learned to make too many allowances for stuff that generally boils down to somebody not giving enough of a damn... And then you see a human being, a doctor, or a mechanic, or a teacher, or a pilot put his or her self right on the line, body and soul, and say, "This is me! This is what I do. And by God I'm gonna do it the best I can!" And the world gets changed just a little bit for the better..."

Since I could not say it better, I won't try. This same thought crosses my mind all too often. Your performance here at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Chester Springs was another one of those reminders that there are some people out there doing the jobs they have been called to do with competence and compassion. More than being a compelling performer and great songwriter, you are a gifted communicator of contentious truth that often results in people choosing up sides rather than hearing each other out. It is not lost on me that it requires both courage and faith to put your musical gifts in the service of your beliefs. On a Saturday night in September a guy named John Flynn armed only with a guitar blew the roof off our little country church like he gave a damn...and the world changed a little bit for the better. Good on you John, I'm a big fan. Chad Brekke Sr. Pastor St. Matthew's Lutheran Church
