Diane Sawyer on ABC World News just said that she
would be spending next week in the Gulf. She asked
viewers to submit any questions or comments we

song, Paint the Money Black (I'm dying to hear it).
Wow! What a powerful statement! You really ought to
submit is to ABC. (ABC World News with Diane Sawyer

John,
We met at Goshen Friends last month. I was so
impressed with your music, and I bought two CD's.
I now have all of the songs memorized and have
introduced you to my parents who also love you.
If you are ever in the West Chester, PA area again
and need an opening act, I would be honored to open
for you. I opened up for EmmyLou Harris
sometime ago, and have played many clubs in NYC and
many festivals in this area. If you'd like to

Just spent a great evening listening to John at the
Rouse House concert. John is a truely
magnificent performer and songwriter and poet who
matures with more and more depth each day.
Like a parent who regrets the loss of a child who
has blossomed into a wonderful adult, I too
miss the rather stupid, funny songs of John's past.
I miss 'If it walks like a Duck" and
"Road Kill" etc. This
is not John's
problem, it is mine. He is great. I am
just a sentimental old fool .
I wish you all could have been there tonight to
enjoy with us.

Dear John,
I'm enjoying your new CD. I have questions
about the meaning of lyrics in the song The Cure.
I tend to read lyrics rather literally instead of
metaphorically. What does the chorus
mean--"sometimes the cure for the pain is in the
pain...sometimes it (truth) drips from your
fingertips"?
Peace,
Jim

is "The Darker the Night, the Brighter the

I wish to thank you for writing the song "Dover".
I work for the Veterans Hospital and that song
really hits home for me. I see day in and day
out what the men and women of our military has
survived serving our country. I must admit
that it is heartbreaking to see all who have served
our country in such physical and mental pain.
I am extremely proud to serve those who have served
us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for
this beautiful song.

John,
Thanks so much for a wonderful coffeehouse at
Greenwood here in Ann Arbor. Being Franciscan-less
out here in Michigan, it was great to connect with a
friend of friends.
As I drove away, I remembered the end of the story
about my son that I had started to tell you. So
here's a recap, but with the ending:
When Alex was little and would get the hiccups, I
would make a big play out of trying to "scare the
hiccups away" by whispering to him, "George Bush is
president!" He'd giggle, and hiccup again. So I'd
try, "Dick Cheney is still in office!" or sometimes
just a plain old, "Donald Rumsfeld!" Typically, no
luck.
But it got to where Alex was trying to equate George
Bush with his 3 or 4 year old version of evil --
like Zurg in Toy Story. Well, that wouldn't do. So
we started to talk about respecting the office of
the President, but that we thought Bush made "bad
decisions." Right. 4 year olds know all about bad
decisions. So we'd be in the minivan with NPR on,
and Alex would hear Bush's name, and would pipe up
with, "Yeah, he makes bad decisions!"
Then one day I got an email from my husband, with a
link to a YouTube video. I watched it and burst out
laughing. Alex zeroed in on me from across the room:
"Whatcha laughin' at, Mommy?" He came over and I
showed him the video of the Iraqi reporter throwing
shoes at then-President Bush during a press
conference. Alex nodded sagely, and said, "He makes
bad decisions, but he's a really good ducker!"
Peace, salaam, shalom (and shared bowls of cereal),
sue

Hi, John. I wanted to thank you, albeit belatedly,
for taking a few minutes out of your time to speak

few of your songs, especially those that dealt with
losing loved ones. Your kind words that spoke of
allowing my heart to be open, even when those around
me are struggling with life-threatening illnesses,
were most appreciated. I believe when one needs to

Hi John,
My name is Julia Randolph and I live in Dover. My son
called to tell us about your song "Dover", since my
husband, Pete, was at Dover for 29 years, except for a
year at Danang, Viet Nam in 1971. My husband found your
song on the internet and listened to it twice. While it
was playing the first time he got teary eyed and after
listening for the second time, he cried for over 30
minutes. While in Nam, he saw our "Heroes" being loaded
on C141's regularly. He also saw them arriving at
Dover before going to Nam. After returning from Nam, he
saw our "heroes" returning here. He also saw many
"Heroes" coming home from Granada, Panama, Somalia, and
Desert Storm. I really believe that hearing your song
brought him a little closer to "final closure" of some
terrible things he was a part of for all those years. I
hope all stations everywhere play your song. We need to
bring our "Boys" home. Vote for a candidate that will
take care of the "Homeland" and the U.S. citizens.
Maybe one day soon, the only thing the C5's and C17's
bring into Dover will be regular cargo.
Thanks for the song.

Hi John,
We saw you in Cleveland this evening and thought you
were great. Julia lives in Ohio and said the spirit of
activism we heard was so far from the usual apathy that
she felt like she must be somewhere else. Bice lives in
New York and felt right at home. We enjoyed your set so
much that we looked up your website right away. Two
things:
1) Tell your audience your last name during the set!
(we were late and had to ask the guy with the beard in
the corner).
2) "If we were to elect Obama, every human being on the
planet could literally share the dream that his or her
[son or grandson] could one day grow up to be president
of the United States!" It would be great. But, in the
spirit of putting your freedom where your mouth is,
please remember that as long as women cannot be elected
to highest office in this country every human being here
is not yet free.
Thanks for your music,

Well, Mr. Flynn, I've gotta be honest. I finally heard
your song 'Dover' shortly after sending one of my
platoon's M240 gunners that way and it was heartrending.
I hope that big airplane brought my friend down easy.
But I also agree with your message to a point. I
would've liked to know that my friend was honored when
he returned to Dover before he was shipped to the
Islands where he was born, but with groups like Westboro
Baptist Church that protest at Soldier's funerals with
signs like, "God loves dead Soldiers!", I don't want my
friend subjected to that kind of crap. Which brings us
to your song, "Not with my Jesus". Man, Mr. Flynn, if
only the people over here would listen that one old man
on the mat, and the people at Westboro would listen to
the little girl...
Anyway, I enjoy your music a lot, Mr. Flynn. Say hi to

great memories. I have to admitt there were alot of

Hi John,
A funny story about one of your songs....
After my daughter and I saw you at the little Christ
Unity Coffee house in Chattanooga, TN earlier this year,
your Two Wolves CD never comes out of the car. As a
result my fiancé’s children have learned all the songs
as well. Paul, my fiancé, is a school teacher living
near Atlanta and his 7 year old son attends this same
school. One day his son's teacher came to pull Paul out
of his class room, once in the hall they could clearly
hear Paul Jr's voice loudly singing "There's a big boat
coming over the water....". Paul Jr was 'sitting' alone
in the boy’s rest room at the time.....
Thank you for such beautiful and meaningful music that
can give our overworked and underpaid school teachers
such a good laugh and most importantly be enjoyed by 41
to 7 year olds equally!!!

My name is Jennifer Franklin and I know you here it alot but
I am one of you biggest fans I remember listen to you when I
was about 15 or so. My DAD Dennis Franklin had gotten me to
listen to you and I fell in love with your music some was
funny and had alot of meaning. Some most was touching and
still had alot of meaning. Although I never make it to one
of you shows my dad always keeps me up to date on you music.
Tell me when your concerts are near me and aren't expensive(
not that I'm cheap) and somewhere I can take my son since I
am a single parent, and money doesn't come easy and can never
find a sitter. So maybe one day I'll get to see you .Keep
the music coming. Stay cool. Oh yeah I am now 30 years old
will be 31 in September so if you could make a concert maybe
sometime so my son and I can come I will be forever
thankful. Thanks for listen to me babble.

Hey, John....thanks for the many gifts you gave us at Kerrville.
As we left the Sunday after your performances, my niece and nephew
and I (10, 7, & 48) sang "A Manatee Sneezed on Me" all the way
to the car. Manatees are my nephew's favorite animals, and he
talked all week about "John Flynn." He had stayed for the
kids' harmonica workshop and gave us harmonica concerts with songs
called, for example, "Why Do Girls Kiss?" (that one had no
story line, just wistful notes) and "Why Did It Have to Happen?"
(story of a boy killed by a bolt of lightning, played with eyes
stretched wide open in alarm).
I'm sure your encouragement about
harmonicas and how no song he writes can be "wrong" was partly
behind our wonderful daily concerts last week of songs "more and
more glorious, and the others will be very very sad."
I learned something about humility,
listening to you sing, which is my current spiritual quest--trying
to understand how humility is not about humiliation, and where the
strength in it is.
Thank you for all of that.

John- It's been over 20 yrs since Dawson Farley asked if I'd mind a
quick stop at Legends Lounge in the Trevose Holiday Inn. He said
someone owed him "a few bucks", (or maybe the other way 'round), but
we stopped in, took a table & a plate full of free finger food. Some
"long-hair" was in the corner re-stringin' his guitar, but I was
paying closer attention to the waitress named Jackie. Then the
"long-hair" came over & sat down with us. It was then that I first
shook hands with John Flynn. Before a blink of an eye, weeks had
passed, I was now a Legend's regular. Ox the bartender knew my
favorite drink, Jackie; my favorite snack, & John would just
auotmatically sing "Amarillo By Morning" when he saw me come
in.(Unless I asked for "Long, Long, Time")
Seems my eyes must of blinked again, for it's over 10 yrs now since
Dawson has passed away, or Ox moved back to Hawaii, & I suspect
Jackie's kid's are in college. Me, I'm anoying my 4th wife, & I
doubt if you ever watch "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" or sing George
Straight anymore. Even the "Spotted Hog" memories are somewhat faded
too. Our paths have crossed far too few times, our hands grasped in
greetings not nearly enough. although I still have every cassette
tape, or CD you ever scribbled your name across, from before "Phila
Cowboy" (Live at the Valley Forge Music Fair" - Yep, it's been torn
down too) to a recent gift of "Dragon", given to me from a co-worker
named Becky,(a Group-W Bench member) I gotta tell ya that when Becky
said she she spoke with you at Longwood Garden's & asked you if you
knew me, (as you signed her soon-to-be-mine copy of Dragon,) the
last thing I would have expected was to hear you'de said "yes". She
went on to say that with a smile you briefly mentioned we'd been
friends .

John,
It was great meeting you and hearing your performance at the Phil
Ochs Song Night last night in Appleton, WI. Your song "Two Wolves"
blew me away. I actually had heard the story before from a Native
American friend of mine, but you did a great job crafting it into a
folk song. I am a newbie folksinger and I would like to learn that
song and play it for people in this area (unfortunately not many
came to the show to hear it firsthand). If you get a chance please
send me the chords. I was so taken in by the story I forgot to look
at what chords your fingers were playing.
I am now listening to the new CD. It's great. Larry Campbell! Very
cool. I am a big Bob Dylan fan and know him from that band.

the albums Dragon, John Flynn, and looking for others. All the songs I
have herd have good words, meanings. I will continue to look for John's

me! This is what I do. And by God I'm gonna do it the best I can!" And
the world gets changed just a little bit for the better..."
Since I could not say it better, I
won't try. This same thought crosses my mind all too often. Your
performance here at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Chester Springs was
another one of those reminders that there are some people out there
doing the jobs they have been called to do with competence and
compassion. More than being a compelling performer and great songwriter,
you are a gifted communicator of contentious truth that often results in
people choosing up sides rather than hearing each other out. It is not
lost on me that it requires both courage and faith to put your musical
gifts in the service of your beliefs. On a Saturday night in September a
guy named John Flynn armed only with a guitar blew the roof off our
little country church like he gave a damn...and the world changed a
little bit for the better. Good on you John, I'm a big fan. Chad Brekke

Hi John The boys are really looking
forward to seeing you on Sunday. Kevin' favorite song is "She's no
Lady". I can't tell you how many times he has "played" that on his
guitar. And supermarkets, church and preschool. Try explaining that to
someone who's never heard it!! ellie

John, it was a real pleasure seeing you
at the Upper Merion Concert Series. I seem to be incapable of making it
through a listen to "Big Boat Comin'" without crying. And yes, that's a
compliment! I hope to be able to make it to Wilmington to see you at the
MERCY2 concert along with David Roth. Keep doing what you're doing! It's
appreciated.

John, Megan at Delaware Today wanted to
put your photo along with their calendar listing Delaware Friends of
Folk 14th Annual Delmarva Folk Festival, Oct. 1st. I gave her contact
info from your Web site. We wanted he to do a feature article on you,
but she said the October print edition is booked (and we pestered them
about this back in March, so it sounds like it's just a busy issue for
them). Thus, we'll request they catch up with you later. Really enjoyed
you at the CoolDog House concert this year, and look forward to seeing
you again at the Festival. Regards, - Mollie Raley, DEFF Bd. Member and
Marketing Chair

My wife and I recently discovered your
music and find your web site very interesting and helpful for new fans.
We particularly liked being able to order hard to find albums and being
able to find where your upcoming shows will be. The notes, pictures,
articles, and messages are of course fun, too. Thanks for the great
music!

Hi John, I didn't have your email
address so I thought I would put a note here. Tim and I just got back
from a week's vacation at the beach, we didn't have tv - just books and
2 John Flynn cd's. We really enjoy your music, whether we are singing
along at the top of our lungs or we are trying to figure out the message
or story that you are telling. your music brings a lot of joy to our
lives, I know we have told you that before but I wanted to thank you
again. hope to see you soon, Lisa (Tim Powers' girlfriend)
Hey, John, great show at the Guthrie
Center Saturday night......even if I did swallow a bug singing along to
your last song. Oh, well, I guess the extra protein didn't hurt.
