October 31, 2005
Just back from Boston where I had a
great time and made a lot of new friends last weekend. My thanks to Eileen
Baker, Neale Eckstein and Laurie Laba for all their hospitality.
This Thursday night at midnight I’ll be standing vigil with my abolitionist
friends and neighbors outside the Delaware Correctional Center in Smyrna where a
man named Brian Steckel is scheduled to be put to death. Brian is not an easy
man to muster any sympathy for. He’s guilty of terrible, terrible acts of
cruelty and should never be allowed to walk free again. But his
death will not restore any of the sunlight he has taken from our world with the
life of his victim, 29 year old Sandra Lee Long. Indeed it will only bring more
darkness. If you have a moment please remember Sandra’s family in your prayers
this week. And maybe, if you can find it in yourself, say one for Brian.
