Greg did a great show and invited me to do a number during the encore. I accepted only because he agreed to back me up on piano and it’s so much fun to watch him hide his discomfort at playing the most blatant, painfully caucasian chord changes he will ever play! We had a terrific time in D.C. last week! The audience at the Kennedy Center was wonderful. The next day we walked all around the mall… visited Mr. Lincoln and the Wall… FDR (This memorial is in its own way one of the most moving, especially in this day and age…). Then we made our way out to the National Cathedral and got to say hello to my friend Sister Helen Prejean, who was speaking in honor of Dr. King’s day. Sister talked about lightning… She told us that though the bolt comes down from heaven, it actually originates when a brave little stream of positive particles reaches UP toward the sky from the ground. She said folks like Dr. King, and Gandhi and Dorothy Day all began changing their worlds by putting out those little positive streams of energy and that heaven’s awesome power waits on all those who reach up for it. She charged us each to “call down the lightning!” Amen!
