We lost a singular treasure last Friday night.
Bruce "Utah" Philips
passed
away at the age of 73 from the congestive heart failure he'd been battling for
years. Utah never gave his illness much quarter. He treated it, not like a
mortal enemy, but like a nagging nanny who was always making an unruly child
take naps. He was friend and hero to many. He was a friend and hero to me. I met
Utah back in 2002. He came up to me after a show and paid me what I took to be a
great compliment... he said with a proud smile and a twinkle in his eye, "My
boy, you have the madness on you!" He even suggested we write a few songs
together but even back then he was pretty ill and we could never seem to get it
together. I never told many folks about this because it would have sounded like
bragging but today it's simply sharing my experience of a grand kind soul I met
on the passage. Our thoughts and prayers are with Utah's wife Joanna.
