Let in the Song
by John Flynn
The old conductor could not help but smile
As he saw me trying to walk down the aisle
The train lurched and swayed as I tried not to stumble
And just above his breath the man mumble
You can’t dance to music at least not for long
If you don’t open your heart to the song
Old Bill Robinson himself could get the steps wrong
If he lost the music, so let in the song
I asked that conductor just what his words meant
And he said his train played him songs as it went
Waltzes and polkas and grand promenades
And he simply stepped to each tune that it played
Cause you can’t dance to music at least not for long
If you don’t open your heart to the song
Old Bill Robinson himself could get the steps wrong
If he lost the music, so let in the song
He said there were songs in the old iron wheels
He said there were songs on the wire
He said there were songs in the way that it feels
To head home to your heart’s desire
He punched my ticket then with courtly style
He paused before turning to step down the aisle
That night as I strolled from the train station home
I smiled as I found myself singing this song
You can’t dance to music at least not for long
If you don’t open your heart to the song
Mister Robinson himself could get the steps wrong
If he lost the music, so let in the song
Bojangles his own self could get some steps wrong
If he lost the music, so let in the song
